Create an inspiring workplace
Create your inspiring workplace: Why and How
Every day brings its own challenges, especially when you live with ADHD and fibromyalgia like I do. Since I was a teenager, I've known the importance of creating an inspiring workspace. It's more than just a place to work; it's a sanctuary, a space for creativity and calm. In this blog post, I want to share my insights into how to create such a workspace and why it's so crucial for productivity, wellbeing and motivation.
Importance of an Inspiring Workplace
1. Increase productivity: A study by the University of Exeter has shown that people are more productive in pleasantly designed rooms. For me, this means that I can think more clearly and be more creative in an inspiring environment. Especially with ADHD, a structured and at the same time stimulating environment helps to keep focus.
2. Well-being and health: A well-designed workplace can promote not only mental but also physical health. Ergonomic furniture, for example, helps to alleviate physical discomfort such as that associated with fibromyalgia. A harmonious environment also has a positive effect on mental health, which is particularly important for people with chronic illnesses.
A walking pad has proven particularly helpful for me. Regular exercise relieves my joint pain, and as I write this post I am walking on it. I can even concentrate better on this task because the part of my brain that is usually easily distracted seems to be busy making sure I don't make a mistake.
3. Motivation: My personal workspace is a reflection of my goals and dreams. When I am surrounded by objects that inspire me, I find new motivation every day, even when I am not feeling well physically or mentally. An inspiring workplace is like a constant, silent cheerleader that reminds me of my abilities and goals.

Steps to Creating an Inspiring Workplace
1. Planning and goal setting: Before you start designing your workspace, ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? Do you want more creativity, better organization, or simply a more peaceful environment? Your goals determine the direction of the design.
2. Ergonomics: An ergonomic chair, a height-adjustable desk and other ergonomic aids are not only important for comfort, but also for your health. Especially with fibromyalgia and similar illnesses, incorrect sitting posture can lead to additional pain. Invest in furniture and equipment such as a walking pad that support your body and are beneficial to your health.
3. Colors and design: Color psychology is fascinating. While blue tones can have a calming effect, yellow and orange tones promote creativity and energy. Choose colors and designs that make you feel positive and boost your work morale.
4. Personal items: Your workspace should reflect your personality. Whether it's artwork, inspirational quotes, photos of loved ones, or small mementos, these items add a personal touch to your workspace and can be a source of inspiration. As someone who enjoys being creative, I've found that such personal items help me express myself and encourage my creativity.
5. Order and organization: A neat environment promotes clear thinking. Clutter can quickly become overwhelming, especially for those with ADHD. Use organizational tools like shelves, drawer organizers, and bulletin boards to create a neat and organized workspace. Remember, organization doesn't mean hiding everything; it's about having a place for everything and knowing everything has its place.
6. Light and air: Good lighting is essential. Natural light is ideal, but if that is not possible, provide adequate artificial lighting. Eye strain and headaches can be made worse by poor light. Good air quality is also important. Consider whether plants or an air purifier would be useful for you. Not only can they improve air quality, but they can also increase well-being.
By creating my own inspiring workspace, I have seen a significant improvement in the way I work and my wellbeing. It's amazing how much a well-designed space can contribute to daily motivation and to coping with the challenges that ADHD and fibromyalgia bring.
